Professor Chanin holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University, an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State, and an M.S. degree in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Professor Chanin is currently the Director of Continuous Improvement at Goodrich Corporation.  He is a former U.S. Navy Main Propulsion Officer and Vietnam veteran who later worked for General Electric as an engineer charged with helping to design the Trident Submarine nuclear reactor. He later joined Hamilton Standard as a member of the engineering team that designed and developed the NASA Space Suit and the Space Shuttle. He eventually moved into manufacturing where he was a Business Unit Manager at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Director of Manufacturing at ABB Corporation Nuclear Power Division, and then Director of Operations and Process Improvement at AeroThrust Corporation.
